Jim Worthy, background designer on Tuff Puppy/The Fairly Oddparents at Nickelodeon.
What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Heinz pickle factory, graveyard shift at a 7/11 in Kalamazoo.
What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Just celebrated the 10 year anniversary of The Fairly Oddparents, proud to be a part of the
new hit Tuff Puppy… Dexter’s Lab, The Powerpuff Girls, Danny Phantom, Robot Jones, My Gym Partner’s A Monkey…
How did you become interested in animation?
They offered me a job
Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
Holland, Michigan. When I was an art director in advertising I worked with Cella Duffy. She became a producer at Klasky and called me looking for an artist.
What’s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
I go to the studio and draw pictures all day.
What part of your job do you like best? Why?
Going to the studio and drawing pictures all day. It’s what I did in school instead of paying attention.
What part of your job do you like least? Why?
Avoiding the muffins and pastry. Very high in fat.
What is the most difficult part for you about being in the business?
Getting the best parking spot in the morning.
What kind of technology do you work with on a daily basis?
A 2H pencil and animation bond.
In your travels, have you had any brushes with animation greatness?
Before I got into the biz, I was friends with the Clampetts. Got to hang out with Bob.
Describe a tough situation you had in life.
Passing the written test for my motorcycle license. They try to trick you.
Any side projects you’re working on you’d like to share details of?
I started oil painting again. Back to my surrealistic roots.
Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business?
Don’t show a portfolio that looks like a school project. Don’t show work because you like it.
Creators/art directors want to see their show. Present a diversity of styles and show flexibility."
